On August 17, 2019, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei made headlines after a clip of him warning Deputy President William Ruto's detractors of unspecified action during a funeral in Olessos went viral.
According to a summons seen by The Standard, Cherargei has been asked to appear before the DCI in Kapsabet to shed light on his alleged utterances. The senator has been given until August 21 to write a statement.
During the funeral, Cherargei told mourners, “Those who are fighting the Deputy President, we are profiling you... if you fight [the] DP you’re fighting us. Don’t think he doesn’t have supporters.” He added, “As his supporters if you continue fighting the DP we are marking you and profiling you. When the time comes we will deal with you. Even the DP has supporters and should be respected.”
Cherargei, a first-time senator and a key ally of Deputy President William Ruto, has confirmed receiving the summons and said he will appear before the police in Nandi tomorrow.
