On August 19, 2019, Peter Ruku, a handicap 20 golfer at Thika Sports Club, made history by claiming the overall prize in the Sanlam Golf tournament, beating a field of 136 players.
Despite starting badly with a nine on the first hole and making several bogeys on both the first and second nine, Ruku finished strongly at the back nine, posting 22 points for a total of 39 points.
He edged out men's winner Nicholas Kabare, Simon Ndung'u, and veteran golfer Philip Mionki on countback, securing his place as the overall winner.
Linda Kinyua claimed the ladies' first prize with a fine score of 37 points, while Simon Ngugi took the gross title with a score of 32 points.
Philip Mionki and Anthony Kabucho won the nines with scores of 24 and 20 points respectively, and Wacira Mucoki emerged the winner in the guest category with 33 points.
