On April 11, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at Nyakegoi Sub-Location in Sameta Sub County, where police officer Joseph Mauti shot and killed Dominic Oyunge Ontumi, a guard at a local bar.

Justice David Majanja of the Kisii High Court has now sentenced Mauti to 20 years in prison for the heinous crime.

According to the court ruling, Mauti's actions were deliberate, and the fact that a life was lost is a matter that cannot be ignored.

During the sentencing, Majanja noted that Mauti had served the police without blemish and was remorseful, but this did not sway the judge's decision.

As reported by The Standard on August 19, 2019, the court heard that Mauti had just been deployed to Sameta Police Station from the General Service Unit (GSU) and had entered Maximum Pub at Itumbe market, where he shot Oyunge in the thigh, killing him instantly.
