On July 13, 2019, Joyce Akinyi, Peris Anyango Omondi, and Paulin Kalala Musankinshay were caught with heroine at the Deep West Resort in Nairobi. The trio appeared before Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts magistrate Christine Njagi on August 19, 2019.

They are accused of trafficking in heroine worth Sh5,588,580, contrary to section 4(a) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic substances control Act of 1994. Akinyi and Omondi are also charged with possessing forged Democratic Republic of Congo passports, contrary to section 54(1)(c) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act No. 12 of 2011.

The three denied the charges and pleaded with the court to be released on favourable cash bail. Akinyi and Omondi were released on bond of Sh2 million each with two sureties of the same amount. Paulin, however, was denied bail due to lack of known contacts in Nairobi and ongoing investigations.

Magistrate Njagi ordered the trio to report to the police station once every week and not travel without informing the court. A pre-trial conference has been scheduled for August 27, 2019.
