On August 18, 2019, Nation Media Group published an article on the front page of The Sunday Nation, titled 'Race is On: Raila to Face Ruto in 2022', which suggested that Raila Odinga had declared his interest in the 2022 presidential election.
Raila Odinga, through his lawyers Rachier and Apollo Advocates, has accused Nation Media Group of liability in defamation and malicious publication of false information.
The article, which was also published online, quoted Raila as saying, 'You have seen me change tack. This is a strategy. There are several ways that can lead us to where our ambition is… We will eventually get to Canaan- the land of plenty where our youths will get jobs, schools, health facilities, water, electricity, and roads will not be a problem. That is where we seek to take the country.'
Raila has denied that he has declared any interest in the 2022 presidential election and has accused Nation Media Group of deliberately mistranslating and twisting his statements to increase newspaper sales volumes for financial gains.
He has demanded that Nation Media Group publish an unconditional retraction and apology on the front page of The Daily Nation Newspaper and online platform within 24 hours.
