On August 30, 2019, Tanzanian journalist Erick Kabendera will face trial for economic crimes charges, which were initially set to be heard on August 5, 2019. The case has drawn international attention, with Britain, the United States, and human rights groups urging Tanzania to guarantee due process for the journalist.
Kabendera, 39, has written for prominent publications, including The EastAfrican, The Guardian, and The Times of London. His arrest and prosecution have raised concerns that his work may be the underlying reason for the charges.
According to his lawyer, Jebra Kambole, the questioning of Kabendera during his arrest indicated that the charges against him are linked to his work as a journalist. Kabendera was initially arrested on August 5, 2019, over issues concerning his citizenship.
