On Sunday morning, a tragic incident occurred in Makunga village, Trans Nzoia County, where a man hacked his wife to death and then hanged himself at their home.
According to neighbours, they heard screams from the couple's house around 3am, prompting them to rush to the scene. However, the door was locked from inside, and it took them some time to break it open.
Upon entering the house, the neighbours found the woman, Caren Chebet, on the bed in a pool of blood. Her husband's body was hanging from the roof in another room.
The neighbours immediately called the police, and the area chief, Selina Upande, was informed about the incident. Upande stated that she had never received reports of the couple fighting.
Chebet's sister, who lives in the same house, revealed that she was woken up by commotion in the couple's bedroom. She said that when she went to the next room, she found her brother-in-law holding a panga quarrelling with his wife and threatening to kill her too.
The house where the incident occurred is a two-roomed house, with part of it converted into a shop. The bodies were taken to Kitale Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
