On June 24, 2019, technicians from Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company disconnected the water supply inside Kibos Maximum Security Prison to facilitate the launch of three water projects in Kisumu and Siaya counties.

Water and Sanitation Principal Secretary Joseph Irungu commissioned the projects, which are funded by the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency, to benefit schools and local communities.

The projects include a borehole at St Elizabeth Massuun Ulaga School in Ugunja, expected to cost Sh2.4 million, and another one at Raduodi Primary School in Ugunja, which will cost Sh5 million.

Both schools are set to benefit from the projects, which will provide water kiosks and individual connections to over 2,500 persons.

A borehole at Pedo Primary School in Nyakach, costing Sh4 million, was also launched over the weekend.

Principal Secretary Irungu expressed confidence that the three projects will go a long way in tackling acute water shortages in the areas.

The projects are solar-powered to cut on electricity expenses.

Additionally, the ministry has approved funding to the tune of Sh20 million to finance implementation of various projects within Siaya County to improve access to portable water to schools through rainwater harvesting/storage and boreholes.
