John De Mathew: Legendary Kikuyu Benga Maestro Dies in Road Accident

On Sunday, August 18, 2019, John De Mathew, a renowned Kikuyu benga musician, died in a road accident along Thika super highway.

According to reports, De Mathew's car rammed into a lorry on his way from a fundraiser in support of a fellow musician. He was rushed to Thika Nursing Home for urgent medical attention but was pronounced dead shortly after.

De Mathew's demise comes about a year since the death of another legendary Kikuyu benga musician, Joseph Kamaru, who passed away on October 3, 2018, at the age of 79.

As news of De Mathew's death spread, tributes poured in from fans, local leaders, and fellow musicians. Nairobi governor Mike Sonko was among the first to send his condolences, describing De Mathew as one of the best musicians he has ever known.

"A road accident has taken the life of the best musician of our time, John De'Mathew. Rest in Peace. RIP. And to you my people, May God Almighty Always Protect You and your Families wherever you are," Sonko said.

De Mathew's death has left the music industry in shock, with many taking to social media to pay tribute to the fallen legend.
