Published on September 24th, 2017, a photo of Paul Kimotho, a man who carried githeri in a plastic bag to a polling station, went viral on social media. Overnight, Kimotho became a celebrity, with people donating designer suits and other items to him.

This incident is not an isolated case. Earlier, a couple, Wilson Wanjohi and Anne Muhonja, were feted for being frugal during their wedding ceremony, spending just one hundred shillings. They were later gifted with a 3.5 million shillings repeat wedding and other pecuniary benefits, acquiring a celebrity status in the process.

While those involved in these acts of philanthropy were well-meaning, it raises questions about value judgment. Was Kimotho's decision to carry githeri a sign of desperation, or was it a matter of personal choice? Similarly, did the couple's decision to spend so little on their wedding reflect their priorities or a situation of deprivation?

The sudden rise to fame can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it brings attention and resources, but on the other hand, it can create unrealistic expectations and put a strain on the individual's ability to cope. Many celebrities have suffered depression due to the pressure of maintaining their status.

It is essential to understand that human dignity is not just about material wealth, but also about attitude, individual choices, and social support. Training and mentorship are crucial for anyone who wishes to succeed in life and maintain their position.

As we celebrate philanthropy, it is also essential to recognize the potential pitfalls of sudden fame and the need for support and guidance to navigate the challenges that come with it.
