Published on August 18, 2019, a recent survey by global market research agency Kantar has revealed that Manchester United is the world's most popular football club, with over 1.1 billion fans and followers worldwide.

The survey, which was conducted in 39 countries with over 54,000 respondents, found that the club has witnessed a significant increase in its fan base since 2012, with an additional 400 million supporters added to its devoted list of fans and followers.

The research defined a 'fan' as an individual who answered survey questions unprompted, with the answer that the club was their favourite football side in the world, while a 'follower' was distinguished as someone who answered survey questions unprompted, with the answer that the Red Devils is a football team they proactively follow apart from it being their favourite team.

The survey found that the largest increases in support for Manchester United happened in the Asia Pacific region, with steady increases recorded across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and the Americas.

According to Manchester Evening News, the research applied assumptions based on 3rd party data before extrapolating the results to the rest of the world.
