Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho publicly criticized ODM MP Junet Mohammed during 2019 Mashujaa Day celebrations, urging political unity under the framework established by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. Joho, who also serves as ODM's deputy leader, emphasized adherence to the 2017 national alliance during his address.
Joho cited remarks from Odinga, stating, "Raila Odinga told me this country is greater than anybody. I want to thank you for that advice because I have seen the benefits of being in government and I will do anything that I can to stay in government and support Uhuru Kenyatta." He reiterated his commitment to Kenyatta's agenda despite past tensions.
The speech occurred amid disputes over Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) cargo transport policies. Although the national directive to prioritize SGR for port freight was suspended, Mombasa truck operators alleged continued dominance of the railway system, threatening their livelihoods.
Joho defended his position, asserting, "I have heard so many people question my stand in regard to transport issues in Mombasa, I want to tell you that I am fully in support that we should push for our businessmen to benefit but we will only do so in a respective manner." He acknowledged prior political rivalries, noting that he and Kenyatta were former adversaries before their 2017 alliance.
