Pawpaw Fruit: A Nutritious and Versatile Ingredient

Published on August 18, 2019

Pawpaw, also known as papai in Swahili, is a highly nutritious fruit that is rich in essential vitamins and minerals. It is a good source of Vitamin C, copper, iron, manganese, magnesium, potassium, and several amino acids, among others.

With over 27 varieties of pawpaw found worldwide, Kenya has four popular varieties: Solo Sunrise, Kiim Mountin, Honey Dew, and Waimanalo. Honey Dew is the most widely available and sought-after variety.

One of the benefits of consuming pawpaw is its positive effect on the digestive system. It can help alleviate bowel movement challenges and promote overall digestive health.

Additionally, pawpaw can be used in various culinary applications. It can be pureed and added to cake batter for a unique flavor, or used as a meat tenderizer when not fully ripe. To slow down the ripening process, simply store it in the fridge.
