Aguero vs Guardiola: Manchester City Boss Explains Bust-Up with Argentine in Tottenham Game

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola explained a heated exchange with Sergio Aguero during a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on August 18, 2019.

Guardiola substituted Aguero in the 56th minute, replacing him with Gabriel Jesus, after Lucas Moura's equaliser. Aguero was visibly upset and had a fiery row with Guardiola as he left the pitch.

Guardiola clarified that he was not upset with Aguero for the goal they conceded, but rather wanted one-on-one movement from his players. Aguero believed Guardiola was upset with him, leading to the heated exchange.

"Aguero believed I was upset with him for the goal we conceded. The goal we conceded was a corner, I wanted one-on-one movement. He thought I was upset with him," Guardiola explained.

Guardiola added that emotion is part of the game and that he and Aguero talked after the incident. "Emotion is part of our game, We talked after and during. He's a guy I love a lot," Guardiola said.

Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur played to a 2-2 draw, with Raheem Sterling scoring the first goal for Manchester City in the 20th minute. Erik Lamela equalised for Tottenham in the 23rd minute, and Sergio Aguero scored the second goal for Manchester City in the first half.

Guardiola's decision to substitute Aguero sparked controversy, but the Manchester City boss explained that it was a tactical move to bring in fresh legs.
