Published on August 17, 2019, a urologist, Harry Fisch, revealed that vasectomy has no effect on a man’s sex drive, testosterone levels, erections, orgasms or how much semen he ejaculates.

Men who have undergone the procedure and their partners often find that sex is more spontaneous and enjoyable because they no longer have to worry about contraceptives or accidental pregnancies.

However, it is essential to continue using some type of contraception until a semen test confirms that the man is sterile, which usually takes about eight weeks and 20 ejaculations.

Although vasectomy is extremely effective for preventing pregnancy, it does not offer protection against acquired immune deficiency syndrome (Aids) or other sexually transmitted diseases.

Consequently, vasectomised men should continue to use condoms, preferably latex, in any sexual encounter that carries the risk of contracting or transmitting infection.

One of the main advantages of vasectomy is that it is relatively permanent, but this can also be a disadvantage if a man later decides he wants to father children.

Doctors advise that vasectomy be undertaken only by men who are prepared to accept the fact that they will no longer be able to father a child.

Reversing a vasectomy is possible, but it is a difficult and expensive operation with no guarantee of success.

Between 85 per cent and 97 per cent of men undergo vasectomy reversal with modern microsurgical techniques, and about half of couples in which the man has had this kind of vasectomy will achieve a pregnancy.
