On Friday evening, Ugandan authorities apprehended six Kenyan fishermen from Remba Island in Homa Bay County for allegedly trespassing into Ugandan waters in Lake Victoria.

According to Island Beach Management Unit chairman Semekiah Mamra, the fishermen were taken to Hama Island in Uganda for detention in a police cell after they hesitated to move out of their boats.

The security officials also confiscated the fishermen's two fishing boats and fishing gear, as well as fish of an unknown value, Mamra said.

"The security officials also snatched fish of an unknown value from the six," Mamra said.

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo had earlier called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to deploy security officials to Lake Victoria to cushion fishermen from frustrations by pirates and Ugandan and Tanzanian authorities.
