On August 17, 2019, Bishop James Maina Ng'ang'a of Neno Evangelism Ministries caused a stir in his church by personally inspecting women's handbags and dressing.
According to a video seen by Nyakundi Report, the bishop summoned several women to the pulpit after inspecting them in church, leading to a thorough dress-down in front of the congregation.
One of the women was shamed for her figure, with the bishop suspecting that she was wearing padded panties and butt-pads to enhance her appearance.
"Is it your figure, ama umevaa suruali ile iko na kitambaa (mattress)? Is it your figure?" Ng'ang'a asked, amidst cheers from the congregation.
He proceeded to lecture the woman on dressing, asking her why she had modified her appearance and what was in her mind when she dressed.
The bishop also criticized a 48-year-old woman for wearing flip flops and carrying a paper bag to church, dismissing her as a confused fellow who may be forgiven for wearing slippers to church.
Ng'ang'a was also heard shaming another woman for her simple dressing, casting aspersions on her ability to afford what she was wearing.
"How can you be smart and then you carry this one?" Are you confused?" Ng'ang'a asked.
He also questioned the woman's ability to afford the clothes she was wearing and her hairdo.
At one point, Ng'ang'a slammed the woman, saying, "At your age we can excuse you for being confused. Please go and take a seat."
