Published on August 17, 2019, a family in Bondo Sub-county is mourning the loss of their 41-year-old son, Cosmas Owuor Ogweyo, who was shot and killed by a hotel guard in Somalia.
Cosmas, a hotelier, was reportedly shot on Monday by the night guard following a small disagreement. His colleagues rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Speaking to the media, Cosmas's father, Pius Ogweyo, expressed frustration that the Kenyan government had not yet contacted them about the incident. He stated that they had to rely on their own networks to gather information about their son's death.
"We were told the gunshot attracted Cosmas' colleagues who picked him and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival," Pius Ogweyo said.
He also lamented that the management of the hotel and Cosmas's colleagues had reported the matter to the Kenyan Embassy in Somalia, but the family had yet to receive any assistance from the government or the recruitment agency that employed Cosmas.
"The management of the hotel that he was working in and his colleagues have all reported the matter to the Kenyan Embassy in Somalia," Pius Ogweyo said.
His widow, Juliana Kimori, added that they had contacted the recruitment agency, but they had refused to talk to them about the incident.
