On August 16, 2019, a Safarilink plane crash-landed at Kichwa Tembo in the world-famous Masai Mara Game Reserve, killing two wildebeests and leaving no human casualties.
According to David Top, the Mara Triangle Tourism officer, the plane's tyre came out, causing it to veer off the runway at the park's airstrip. The incident occurred at around 10:30 am.
"It was round 10.30am when the plane developed a mechanical hitch, speeding and hitting a herd of wildebeests," said David Top.
Safarilink confirmed the accident in a press release, stating that the aircraft was carrying out a scheduled service from Nairobi to Maasai Mara and back.
"The aircraft was carrying out our scheduled service with a routing Nairobi (Wilson) – Maasai Mara – Nairobi (Wilson)," read the statement seen by The Standard.
Despite the incident, all passengers and crew on board were reported to be safe, and the aircraft was disabled. Engineers were airlifted to the scene to assess the situation.
