On a weekday afternoon in August 2019, I took a visiting friend from Manchester, UK, to 1824 Bar and Restaurant on Langata road, Nairobi, in search of the best pork in town.

He had heard about the bar's reputation for serving great pork, and I was happy to show him around. As we arrived, I noticed that the place was being cleaned up, and the outside gazebo was stacked with hundreds of chairs, a testament to the previous night's debauchery.

My friend was impressed by the bar's atmosphere and the quality of the pork, which he described as 'world class.' We sat at the balcony overlooking Lang'ata Road and looked over at Pitstop, which was still quiet at the time.

After enjoying his meal and a warm beer, my friend decided to come back to 1824 Bar and Restaurant on a Friday. He left the next day at 6:30 am, but he couldn't tell me what happened during his visit.

When I asked him, he simply said, 'It was in the middle of the night, then it was morning.'
