On August 16, 2019, Lady Justice Maureen Onyango issued a court order halting the merger and shutdown of 38 public universities proposed by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha without involving Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu).
The judge ruled in favor of Uasu, which had argued that the merger would disrupt learning and convolute the courses taken by students.
She also noted that the transfer of students would strain the facilities affected by the merger.
However, the judge clarified that she was not stopping the proposal as suggested by former Finance CS Henry Rotich in his budget speech on June 13, 2019.
