President Uhuru Kenyatta's Education conference at the KICC on Friday, August 16, 2019, was marred by a controversy involving the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials.

According to reports, the officials were blocked out of the event for lack of accreditation, despite being invited to attend the conference.

One of the KNUT officials stated that they were asked to get badges for the forum from the Ministry of Interior, for them to have access to the venue.

The conference, which hosted 2,000 delegates from across the country, aimed to provide a platform for academicians, religious leaders, and policymakers to discuss the quality of education in the country.

KNUT secretary-general Wilson Sossion and Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha have had a long-standing dispute over the implementation of the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC).

KNUT had been opposed to the idea of a new curriculum, citing teacher unpreparedness and inadequate infrastructure.

CS Magoha, on the other hand, claimed that the establishment of the task force was for purposes of enhancing access, relevance, transition, equity and quality for effective curriculum reforms.
