On August 16, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko sparked a national conversation when he announced plans to expose politicians involved in scandals with slay queens.
According to Sonko, his team had received numerous complaints from women who claimed that their children had been fathered by politicians, but the fathers had refused to take responsibility.
He revealed that investigations had implicated 2 Cabinet Secretaries, 4 Principal Secretaries, 7 Governors, 2 Presidential candidates, 26 MPs, 9 Senators, 22 MCAs, and 8 prominent businessmen in the scandal.
"In a number of cases, we men are carelessly doing 'bad manners' with our girlfriends without protection and even testing for HIV," Sonko said. "Also in almost all the cases a few months after enjoying doing bad manners we send money to our girlfriends convincing them to abort."
He also claimed that some politicians had intimidated their girlfriends with death threats to prevent them from being exposed.
