On August 16, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko announced an update on his investigation into prominent individuals who have impregnated young women, commonly referred to as slay queens.
According to Sonko, his team had identified 36 Cabinet Secretaries, 4 Principal Secretaries, 7 Governors, 2 Presidential candidates, 26 MPs, 9 Senators, 22 MCAs, and 8 prominent businessmen who had been named as individuals responsible for impregnating women and refusing to take responsibility.
Although Sonko did not disclose the names of the affected individuals, he stated that he was compiling a detailed dossier, which would be published on his social media pages.
He also announced that he had initiated a process to hire legal counsel for the affected women, with the aim of seeking justice for their children.
“In a number of cases, we men are carelessly doing 'bad manners' with our girlfriends without protection and even testing for HIV. Also in almost all the cases a few months after enjoying doing bad manners we send money to our girlfriends convincing them to abort,” Sonko said.
“One prominent Presidential candidate, 2 MPs, 2 Governors, and a prominent businessman have done this more than 3 times with different girlfriends. Other politicians, senior civil servants, and businessmen intimidate their girlfriends with even death threats for them not to be exposed,” Sonko added.
