Conceived in 2009, Konza Technocity aims to be a global technology and innovation hub, rivaling Silicon Valley in the US, Bangalore City in India, and Tel Aviv Smart City.
However, ten years later, the project has only one building standing, leaving many to wonder if the dream is dead.
Located 70 kilometers from Nairobi, along Mombasa Road, Konza Technocity is more than just a real estate project. It's a smart city that incorporates Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to enhance urban services, reduce wastage, and conserve resources.
The project's foundational infrastructure includes a national data center, underground utility ducts, and road infrastructure, with an estimated completion date of early 2022.
Despite initial doubts, investors have started streaming in, with the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) building a campus at Konza Technocity.
KAIST, ranked amongst the top global research-based universities, is expected to attract top talent in science and engineering, replicating the innovation culture that has powered the South Korean digital economy.
Many critics have argued that Konza Technocity is an over-glorified real estate project with little innovation component. However, the presence of KAIST and other research institutions will put this thinking to rest.
Supported by world-class infrastructure, Konza Technocity is expected to attract and retain top science and engineering talent across the globe.
