Published on August 16, 2019, officials in Trans Nzoia and Uasin Gishu counties have expressed optimism about the upcoming maize harvest. The region's maize producing counties are expecting a bumper harvest, with Uasin Gishu County Executive for Agriculture Samuel Yego noting that the maize fields show good prospects.
However, Mr Yego expressed concern that farmers may not benefit from good prices if the government does not procure their maize. He also pointed out that the Strategic Food Reserve (SFR) program did not receive budgetary allocations for purchasing maize from farmers.
Trans Nzoia County Executive for Agriculture Mary Nzomo stated that the county is expecting 5.5 million bags of maize to be harvested. To mitigate post-harvest losses, the county government has implemented programs to support farmers.
