Josephine Kabura and 10 others now face money laundering charges following court filings in 2019, accused of siphoning Sh791 million from the National Youth Service between 2015 and 2018. The prosecution amended charges against 11 suspects, adding 16 counts related to concealing illicit funds through real estate purchases and vehicle acquisitions.
The stolen funds allegedly financed properties in Nairobi's Roselyn Estate, Muthaiga North, and Thika, as well as a Mercury House restaurant. A Range Rover valued at Sh23.4 million and a Sh90 million Roselyn Estate home were specifically cited as assets linked to the scheme. The court heard that suspects intentionally obscured the funds' origins, including a 2015 transaction involving Sh40 million deposited at Family Bank.
The case, stemming from two embezzlement scandals, will proceed to trial on September 10. Prosecutors plan to call 35 witnesses, with nine having already testified. The prosecution stated the accused were aware the money was proceeds of crime, citing a 2015 arrangement to deposit Sh40 million to conceal its source.
