Ugandan opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, was remanded to Luzira Prison on April 30, 2019, following charges of disobedience related to an unauthorized protest against social media taxation. The Kyadondo East MP, along with his brother Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu and two others, appeared before Buganda Road Court in Kampala for alleged involvement in the July 2018 demonstration.
In response to questions before his detention, Wine stated, "Your honour thank you for this opportunity. I'm confident because indeed it's not me on trial; It's the court itself on trial. I have not committed any crime. I'm only here because I disagree with the political leadership of this country and in particular President Museveni." He emphasized his stance as a protester against unfair taxation and injustice, declaring, "If I'm to go through this oppression and pain for the betterment of my country so be it."
Wine was arrested on April 29, 2019, after complying with a summons from the Criminal Investigations Directorate. The 37-year-old MP, elected in 2017, has consistently challenged President Yoweri Museveni's administration through anti-government music and activism. Authorities had previously placed him under house arrest in late April 2019, blocking his attempts to attend a concert at his Kampala nightclub.
Police described the arrest as a "preventive measure" against potential criminal activity. Recent months have seen repeated efforts by authorities to limit Wine's public appearances, including canceling performances that led to clashes between opposition supporters and security forces. His legal case will next be heard on Thursday, with the court set to address the charges of statutory duty violation.
