Facebook has deactivated a Nairobi-based group operated by an individual identified as an undercover police officer, according to a report. The page, named Nairobi Crime Free Group, was suspended on Wednesday following a BBC investigation into its activities.
The group reportedly used social media to issue warnings to suspected criminals, with reports alleging that individuals who ignored these alerts later faced fatal consequences. Posts on the page reportedly included photographs of deceased individuals, though no independent verification of these claims has been publicly disclosed.
A colleague of the group's administrator, described as another undercover officer, criticized the platform's decision, stating that closing the page would not prevent criminal activity. "Closing the group will not protect criminals from dying," the individual asserted in a public statement.
Local human rights advocates have condemned the group's operations, arguing that its methods violate legal and ethical standards. Despite repeated calls for police intervention, authorities have not taken action against the administrator. In 2018, a former police chief explicitly distanced the force from the individual, stating he was not affiliated with the department.
