On July 30, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu's world came crashing down as a Sh588M graft case against him reached a critical point. The nickname 'Babayao,' which describes an untouchable and undefeated character, seems to have lost its magic for the embattled governor.
Waititu was arrested and charged in court, and although he was freed on Ksh15m bail, he was ordered not to access his Kiambu County office until the matter is heard and determined. This development has effectively blocked him from carrying out his duties as governor, leaving many to wonder how long this case will take.
Given the slow pace of justice in Kenya, it's likely that this case will drag on beyond 2022. In the realpolitik of Kenyan politics, Waititu, who was once touted as a possible running mate to DP Ruto in the 2022 elections, now seems like a fixed man.
