On July 30, 2019, the Kenya Primary Special Schools Association for Learners with Special Needs (KPSSALSN) appealed to the government to facilitate the acquisition of sports equipment and materials for special primary schools.

The association's chairperson, Sister Judith Khavengwesi, emphasized the importance of sports in the holistic development of learners with special needs, stating that it helps them develop physically, mentally, and emotionally.

She noted that the sporting equipment are very expensive for individual schools to afford, and that the government's support would be crucial in enabling them to develop their talents.

According to Sister Khavengwesi, learners with special needs require specific equipment, such as swimming pools for those with hearing impairments, special balls for mentally challenged learners, and showdown tables and special balls for visually impaired learners.

The 17th Edition of the National Special Schools Ball Games Championship, which took place at Meru Polytechnic, brought together 1200 learners with special needs and 170 teachers from across the country.

Meru County CEC for Education, Ms. Linah Kailanya, commended the participants for their courage and urged County Governments to support the schools, stating that disability is not inability and that the event was a well-mandated treat for nurturing special children.
