On February 8, 2018, the United States government declared its full confidence and support for Ambassador Robert Godec, who has been serving in Kenya. This declaration came after opposition leaders called for Godec's recall, citing allegations of bias against NASA leader Raila Odinga.

According to the opposition leaders, led by Ugunja Member of Parliament Opiyo Wandayi, Ambassador Godec had been siding with the Jubilee government. Wandayi, who is also the secretary for political affairs in ODM and chairman of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, alleged that Godec's continued stay in the country would likely harm the long-term relationship between the people of Kenya and the US.

The opposition leaders further noted that a majority of Kenyans had lost confidence in Godec, and that he was no longer impartial as expected for someone in his position. Wandayi also alleged that Godec had misled the US government on Raila's swearing-in ceremony and the political situation in the country.
