On July 29, 2019, news broke that Bomet Governor Dr. Joyce Laboso had passed away at the Nairobi Hospital, but little was known about her medical condition.
Her husband, Edwin Abonyo, later revealed that it was her wish to keep her health condition private, citing that she did not want it to affect her service delivery to the people of Bomet County.
Speaking at the Lee Funeral Home, Mr. Abonyo said Dr. Laboso had suffered for a long time but the family opted to keep the details private, adding that she was very strong and they could only reciprocate that by also being strong for her.
Dr. Laboso's health issues had been a subject of speculation, with news of her hospitalization in London in June 2019 and her subsequent medical trip to India and the United Kingdom.
However, her office had dismissed the speculations, stating that she was recuperating well and still under observation.
Dr. Laboso passed away at the age of 59, leaving behind a legacy of being an icon of women leadership in the country, as described by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
