Published on July 29, 2019, a General Service Unit officer was shot dead and his colleague injured in an attack at the Wilson Airport watchtower in Nairobi.
Constable Stephen Mukangi was shot at close range and died at the scene before he was robbed of his AK47 rifle. His colleague was also robbed of his AK47 rifle and shot in the leg, but managed to escape with a bullet wound.
Anti-terror detectives are investigating the motive behind the incident, which has been taken seriously by authorities due to the airport's crucial role in the country.
According to eyewitnesses, the two attackers wore jungle uniforms similar to those used by police and approached the GSU officers on Saturday night, claiming to need assistance with a car that had developed a mechanical problem.
As the GSU officers walked to the scene, two other men in jungle uniforms joined them, prompting a scuffle and the attackers' attempt to grab the officers' guns. One of the attackers opened fire, killing Mukangi on the spot.
Langata OCPD Gregory Mutiso led a team of officers to the scene, where they recovered two spent cartridges, an empty butt, and two magazines with 60 bullets.
