Published on July 29, 2019, ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru has assured that the government will not meddle in Safaricom's selection of a new chief executive following the death of Bob Collymore.

According to Mucheru, the government will allow Safaricom to choose its CEO of choice without interference, stating, “They (Safaricom Board) are in the process of doing so and we are confident that the board will do this,”

Former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph has been appointed as the interim CEO as the company's board searches for Collymore's successor. Joseph attributed his appointment to the fact that none of the top officials at Safaricom were ready to fill Collymore's shoes.
