On Sunday, a 14-year-old girl from Kagaa Village in Nyandarua County was brutally defiled by a man who dug a hole into her bedroom. The suspect then attempted to kill her.
The girl, a Class Eight student, is currently in a coma at JM Level Four Memorial Hospital and is in critical condition.
According to Nyandarua Health Chief Officer Dr Jorum Muraya, the girl is traumatized and cannot talk. 'Our staff is working to stabilize her condition. She is not in a good state,' Dr Muraya said.
The suspect is still at large, and residents are outraged by the incident. They claim that the rise in crime in the area is due to increasing drug abuse, with bhang being openly sold with the knowledge of security officers.
Residents staged a protest against the rise of crime in the area, citing several instances of sexual abuse, including a Class Seven girl who got pregnant after being defiled.
Simon Gitonga, the chairperson of Kagaa Primary School, said that drugs usage is affecting education standards, with a high rate of school dropouts being witnessed.
Photos from the scene show the hole dug by the suspect to access the girl's bedroom.
