Watermelon, known as tikiti in Kiswahili, is a staple fruit in Kenya, available year-round and affordable for all. A slice can cost as little as Sh10, while a whole watermelon ranges from Sh200 to Sh400.

As a fruit that is approximately 92% water, watermelon is an excellent source of hydration. It is also rich in fiber and contains significant levels of vitamins A, B6, and C. Notably, watermelon contains more lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, than any other fruit or vegetable, according to the National Watermelon Promotion Board.

When selecting the best watermelon, look for one that is free from bruises, cuts, and dents. A heavier watermelon is generally better, and it should not be shiny. The presence of a yellow circle, indicating that the watermelon ripened in the sun, is also a good sign. If unsure, you can ask the vendor to cut a small piece for you to taste.
