On July 28, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu presented himself at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) offices in Nairobi, marking a significant development in the Sh588 million tender scandal.
According to EACC spokesman Yassin Amaro, the governor was in their custody, having surrendered in response to an order issued by the anti-graft body on Saturday.
The order, which also targeted the governor's wife Susan and five other county officials, was issued in connection with a graft probe into the irregular awarding of tenders amounting to Sh580 million.
Waititu's lawyer, Kipchumba Karori, explained that the governor was out of town when the order of his arrest was issued, leading to a cat-and-mouse game with detectives who had been searching for him and his wife.
Despite visiting the governor's three known residences in Runda, Garden Estate, and near Ridgeways on Kiambu Road, as well as raiding their known hangouts in Nairobi's central business district and a social joint in Nakuru, the detectives failed to find the couple.
The suspects are expected to face charges of irregular procurement of a tender for the upgrading of various gravel roads to bituminous surface in the county, awarded to M/s Testimony Enterprises Ltd worth Sh588 million during the financial year 2017/2018.
