On July 28, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko made a bold statement to DP William Ruto, warning him that he had no option but to support the Uhuru-Raila handshake.
Speaking at the burial of Dr Morris Rukunga, uncle to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, at Muujwa Catholic Church in Imenti Central, Sonko said, 'I want to remind my good friend the DP. You have no option but to support the handshake. This is the only way to go in uniting all communities in Kenya. If you don't, you will perish politically.'
Team Wanjiku, led by Sonko and Gatundu lawmaker Moses Kuria, has publicly declared its support for the truce between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
According to Kuria, anyone who opposes the handshake is an enemy of the common mwananchi. He also warned those trying to disrespect President Uhuru Kenyatta that they will be dealt with head-on.
Other leaders who accompanied Sonko to Meru were EALA MP Simon Mbugua and Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip.
