On August 10, 2018, a shocking scene unfolded in the Kenyan Parliament as lawmakers were caught on camera collecting bribes from sugar barons in exchange for altering a report that would have held them accountable.

According to eyewitnesses, the MPs, who were set to debate a controversial report on sugar imports, were instead distracted by a group of colleagues who were distributing envelopes containing Sh10,000 each.

One MP, who wished to remain anonymous, was quoted as saying, "The chairs only have six members behind them. It is better this report is rejected and a new one drafted that has the support of everybody."

Another MP was overheard lamenting, "I am told the money is over. I have not got my share. They are complaining that journalists are here."

Disgruntled MPs accused their colleagues of receiving millions in total to alter the report and getting additional money to shoot it down.

Godfrey Odanga (Matayos) bashed his colleagues for lowering the integrity of Parliament, saying, "Shame, how do you get Sh20,000 yet you earn a million? This is really bad."
