This archive report was first published on 27 July 2019.

On July 27, 2019, Bungoma County launched four ambulances donated by the Transformation Health Services Under Universal Health Care Project (THS-UHC), a project supported by the World Bank.

However, the county has been accused of trying to conceal the fact that the project was funded by the World Bank, rather than the county itself.

Residents were shocked to learn that the county spent a significant amount of money on the launch event, with Governor Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati reportedly paying attendance allowances ranging from Ksh. 5,000 to various officials, including MCAs, CECMs, and media personnel.

According to Wakoli Kunani, leader of the Western Youth Council, the money spent on the launch could have been better used to purchase additional ambulances. 'The money that has been used to launch these 4 ambulances should have been used to purchase one or two more ambulances,' he said.

It has been alleged that since 2017, the county has not allocated any funds to purchase ambulances, relying instead on donations.
