Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has defied a Labour court ruling, stating he will remain the union's top leader despite being deregistered as a teacher.
On Saturday, Sossion said he would remain registered with the Teacher Service Commission, citing a dispute over his employment contract rather than his registration as a teacher.
"I am in the list as a registered teacher. TSC merely terminated my employment with them as they do to anyone seeking elective public positions," Sossion said in a statement.
He added that many teachers in elective union positions have terminated their employment with TSC by resigning or retiring but continue to retain union offices.
The Labour court had allowed the Teacher Service Commission to deregister Sossion following his entry into politics, citing a breach of the Teachers Code of Conduct and Ethics (2015).
