Kenya's youth have long complained about the difficulty of landing government jobs due to the requirement of extensive work experience. However, the National Youth Council (NYC) has announced a change in policy that will make it easier for young graduates to secure government positions.

According to NYC Chair Fatuma Abubakar, the council has been negotiating with the Kenya National Employment Authority (NEA) to allow young people to get government jobs after completing an internship at a government agency.

Ms. Abubakar stated, 'The issue of young people being told that they need three years' experience before being promoted will be a thing of the past.' She added that internship experience will be considered part of one's professional experience and will be the only requirement for certain positions.

The move is aimed at addressing the issue of youth unemployment and radicalization, which has been linked to the lack of employment and income-generating opportunities. Ms. Abubakar noted that through county forums, the council will sensitize young people about job placements, technical and vocational educational training programs, and other opportunities.
