On July 25, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested a Nairobi trader, Jaydeep Rajeshkumar Thanki, for allegedly lying to the police about being robbed of KSh 10.5 million at gunpoint.
Thanki claimed that on July 22, 2019, at around 6:30 pm, he was robbed by armed robbers near Premier Academy in Nairobi. He alleged that the robbers took KSh 10.5 million from him and escaped towards Pangani.
However, according to the DCI, Thanki had actually received KSh 3.25 million from a client and had deposited the money into his bank account. He had not been robbed at all.
Thanki was charged with giving false information to the police and was released on a bond of KSh 200,000.
