On July 15, 2019, Esther Wambui, a cancer patient who was denied treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in April, passed away.

Wambui's plight was highlighted in a video clip that went viral after she and her sister were turned away by the referral hospital for failing to pay a Sh1,950 bill.

According to award-winning investigative journalist John-Allan Namu, Wambui's family had tried to raise money to pay the Sh200,000 hospital bill left behind by the late patient.

Wambui's sister, Gladys Mwihaki, had earlier spoken out about the family's struggles to afford cancer treatment, saying that her day job of doing laundry barely covered her children's food expenses.

The heartbreaking incident in April had sparked an outpouring of support from well-wishers, who eventually helped Wambui gain admission to KNH after a two-day wait.
