This archive report was first published on 26 July 2019.

On July 10, 2019, the Kenyan government suspended the operations of 27 betting companies that failed to meet regulatory requirements. The move was aimed at controlling the industry and ensuring compliance with tax regulations.

However, on July 26, 2019, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) approved the renewal of licenses for 10 of these companies, paving the way for their operations to resume.

The cleared companies include Betway, Mozzartbet, Odibets, Bet Boss, Kick Off, Palms Bet, Easi Bet, Ken Book Makers, Eastleigh Bet, and Lucky to you.

Despite this development, other popular betting platforms, such as SportPesa and Betin, remain under scrutiny for failing to comply with regulatory requirements.

The affected companies have filed a petition in court, claiming they are being unfairly targeted and have paid their taxes as required by law.
