As of 2019, Kisumu county officials are earning hefty salaries without due process, sparking concerns about nepotism and favoritism in the county government. Governor Anyang Nyong'o has been accused of hiring senior staff members without following the proper recruitment process.
According to sources, some of the senior officers hired by Governor Nyong'o include Alloyce Ager, director of the governor's press unit, earning an average of Sh250,000 plus allowances per month. Others include Haggai Kadiro, director of administration, Victor Nyagaya, Nairobi liaison officer, Bob Madanje, director of protocol, Abala Wanga, seconded to the Lake Region Economic Bloc, and many more.
The county secretary, Atieno Otieno, is above the civil service age of 63 years old and is earning a government pension and a salary at the same time. Otieno was appointed despite being the CEC for health in Siaya at the time of his appointment.
Meanwhile, nepotism and favoritism have rocked the Kisumu county government with the appointment of senior staff members and casuals raising eyebrows. Sources have confided that the public service human resource manual is clear on procedures of recruitment of public service staff.
Residents now want to know who appointed the tens of casuals at the executive and in the county hospitals. Others whose appointments have raised concern include acting county secretary Olang' Onudi and the Jack Ranguma chief officers who were reinstated and are earning salaries.
