Kenyan Man Charged with Conning Businessman of Sh25.7 Million in Fake Gold Scam

On July 26, 2019, a Kenyan court published details of a case involving a man accused of conning a local businessman out of Sh25.7 million.

The suspect, Jonathan Okoth Opande, allegedly obtained the cash from city businessman Samuel Olaleye by falsely claiming he could sell him 250 kilograms of gold.

According to the charges, Opande presented himself to Olaleye as a director of a gold-trading company at Lagos hotel in Nairobi between January 19th and February 18th, 2019.

Opande, 32, was charged with obtaining money under false pretenses and extortion before Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot at Milimani Law Courts.

He denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000. The case will be heard on September 17th, 2019.
