On July 25, 2019, a man was presented in court for allegedly obtaining Ksh.25.7 million through a fake gold scam.
Jonathan Okoth Opande, 32, is accused of presenting himself as a businessman and conning Samuel Olaleye in exchange for 250 kilograms of gold at a hotel in Nairobi between January 19 and February 18, 2019.
According to the allegations, Opande claimed to be a director of a gold trading company, which led the complainant to hand over the gold in exchange for the money.
Opande was charged alongside Steve Ochieng, who is currently at large with an arrest warrant issued against him.
When the charges were read out to him before Magistrate Kennedy Cheruyot at Milimani Law courts, Opande denied the allegations.
He was released on a cash bail of Ksh.100,000 and directed to surrender his passport to the court.
The case will be heard on September 17, 2019.
