On July 25, 2019, the High Court in Kisumu handed down a 30-day jail sentence to Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o and his sister Risper Nyagoy Nyong'o for disobeying court orders in a contentious family estate case.
High Court Judge Justice Thrispisa Cherere issued a warrant of arrest for the Governor and his sister, instructing the Kisumu County Commander to apprehend the duo.
The sentence was a result of the Governor and his sister failing to pay a fine of Ksh.400,000 each, issued by the court after they were found guilty of contempt of court in May.
The case revolves around a multi-million shilling estate, valued at approximately Ksh.200 million, which includes 100 acres of land in Miwani under a 99-year lease, as well as parcels of land in Nairobi, Manyatta, Tamu, Milimani estates, and East Rata in Seme sub-county in Kisumu.
The Governor's nephews, Geoffrey Omondi and Kenneth Odhiambo, had sued Nyong'o and his sister for failing to include their families in the list of beneficiaries in their late father's estate.
The case is set for mention on October 7, 2019.
